Jhonate's reprieve from her father has been cut short. She is forced to return home to Malaroo, bringing Justan along with her. The journey she has avoided for so long has become all the more difficult because someone wants Justan dead.

The rogue horse Esmine, a mythical beast of remarkable power, has been captured by a troupe of dwarf smugglers. Tarah Woodblade must gather a group of warriors and rescue Esmine before she is sacrificed, her soul bound to make a weapon of mass destruction.

Evil stirs. Darkness is building. But can anyone trust Xedrion, The Protector of the Grove?

Protector of the Grove The Bowl of Souls Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Trevor H Cooley Andrew Tell Books

Protector of the Grove was a fun and engaging book that was difficult for me to put down--I wished that there was just one more chapter when I was done. It was also well-paced, creative, and had a nice combination of suspense and excitement. There were even a few particularly emotional moments that caught me completely off guard. If you've enjoyed his previous books, you know that the the jewel of Cooley’s writing is his unique blend of interesting characters and vivid storytelling—this was certainly no exception.

MILD SPOILER ALERT!

There was one particular scene in the book that showcased in my mind. I quote, “Deathclaw leapt up to the saddle on Gwyrtha’s back. He did not sit astride her like a man, something he thought foolish. Instead, he dug his rear claws into the leather and crouched, grabbing two handfuls of her main. The merchant stood there in amazement, staring at the two of them. The clouds parted momentarily to allow the full moon to line them with a soft glow. Deathclaw cocked his head at the merchant and for a brief moment his eyes reflected the moonlight as if he were possessed by an eerie light. Then he chirped and Gwyrtha ran off into the night. Deathclaw promised her they would not stop until they reached Justan.”

Protector of the Grove The Bowl of Souls Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Trevor H Cooley Andrew Tell Books Reviews

Another great installment by Trevor H. Cooley. We're taken along with Tarah Woodblade again and learn more about her story and significance in the Bowl of Souls story. Not only is more revealed about her and where she's going, but we're also enlightened a bit more about Jhonate and how she came to be at the Academy and why she's so distraught about her future prospects with Justan. A must read for the fan of Bowl of Souls as the story only gets better especially when we get to know the legendary Xedrion bin Leeths.
I Love this series so far and can not wait for more the characters are so easy to fall in love with. i am only a few chapters into this book at the time i am writing the review but it is just like all of the Trevor H. Cooley's other books hard to put down. if my battery didn't need to charge on my tablet i would still be reading instead of writing this review. so start with his first series The Bowl of Souls" then pick up the previous book in this series "Tarah Woodblade" then sit back in a comfy chair and enjoy this book. just remember to charge your kindle or what ever tablet you are reading on.
Another great chapter in this series of books. The characters keep evolving and growing, and the plot continues to thicken. I have enjoyed all of these books so much and this latest edition does not disappoint! The only bad part about this book is that I read it too fast and could not enjoy it longer. The world Trevor Cooley had created in this series of books is interesting and exciting. If you have not read any of Trevor's work you are missing out, start reading his books now! If you have read Trevor's other books then don't hesitate to get this latest work. It is an exciting five star read!
I was just thinking this morning that I'm lost without a Bowl of Souls book to listen to. I find myself searching for something that compares and there is nothing. The characters are so very well developed and especially by book 7 I have found myself so invested in their lives and exploits that they are like family members. I feel bad for them when they make mistakes and fail (and like all loved ones, they do!) and I rejoice in their good decisions and their successes. The action in this book as in the others is great and is always building and climactic and the imagination that Cooley uses in his monsters and in the use of magic is absolutely unending and amazing! As for romance it is there but it is not a main theme of the book. It is just enough to make things make sense and shouldn't bother anyone. The closest "love" you find in the "Bowl of Soul" books are within the bonded group for each other and it's a kind of love and kinship that bypasses any type of love that we understand. Hurry Audible and send me Book 8!
I have joined in on the bowl of souls series just recently in the "The Jharro Grove Saga". The story setup is quite interesting, following up the recent war, though in both of the recent books I had this strange feeling of shortness. I finished the second book in the matter of hours.
This book feels especially that way since the story is split between 2 separate threads. You could literally split up this into 2 short novels. Also both threads were a straight to the point one, practically with no side-adventures. I did like the contents, though it felt like there was something missing.
I was concerned after reading the last book. We were introduced to a new batch of characters and we were told that while this book would follow Justan again it would also follow Tarah as well. I was worried that the story would get to stretched out and diluted. That we would get a less focused story. Was I right to be concerned? I would have to say yes. One thing I want to point out is the length of the book, 318 pages. That makes it the 2nd shortest book after Tarah Woodblade with essentially double the characters.... That right there is a red flag.

Now Cooley did a pretty good job with both of the stories. They both felt 'complete' if short. The problem is that some scenes lacked gravity or feeling. Some things that have been built towards really just fell flat, like Justan meeting Xedrion and that part is not alone in that category.

The writing itself was clean and I cant remember any typos. The changing POVs were also handled well. As I finished the book I just felt my concern growing as we could be getting even more POVs. I have read a lot of book in the past few years and something stands out. The more POVs you have the longer your book should be. Key examples are GRRM and Jordan. Unfortunately Cooley seems to be shortening the books and cramming as much as he can in them. That means more jumping around and less depth and I don't like it. The story(s) is a bowl of souls story but just....lessened.
